Kells move into semis

THE Iggesund Cumbria Cup winner will come from West Cumbria after the four local sides triumphed in the weekend’s quarter-finals.
Broughton Red Rose will host Seaton in the semis after they beat Walney Central and Wath Brow respectively.
And Kells will entertain Maryport in the other semi, after winning through against Barrow Island and Millom. The winner of Broughton v Seaton will host the final.
Broughton just kept their noses in front, at home to Walney Central, to secure their place in the last four, winning 34-30.
Paul Osbourne, Richard Harrington, Richard Campbell, Mark Walker, Liam Monaghan and Jonathan Ritson all touched down for Red Rose with Mark Walker overcoming a late fitness test to play and add five goals.
Seaton played in the only all Cumberland League tie, as they hosted Wath Brow Hornets at the Welfare.
Richard George, Mark Routledge, Adam McGlasson, Ryan Blair and Duncan Moyle were the try scorers for Seaton, with Moyle tagging on four goals to seal the victory.
Wath Brow made it tough for them, with tries from James Toman and David Byers, both converted by Jason Connery.
Kells travelled down to Barrow Island and edged into the lead straight away with a Tony Burns penalty goal.
They built on that with a Carl Sice try in the 10th minute and a touchdown for Ryan Groggins after a quarter of the match had gone by, one converted by Burns for a 12-0 lead.
But the hosts came back into the game with two tries, one converted before the break, with Kells then holding a slender two point lead going into the second half.
It was nip and tuck all the way, as a Lee Haney try put Barrow Island into the lead with 20 minutes to go.
But Kells fought back and Sice popped up with 10 minutes remaining to cross the whitewash, with Burns converting to clinch the game at 18-14.
Maryport had a much easier time of it at Millom, where they dominated the game to win 46-6.
There were braces across the park, for Daniel Rooney, Jonathan Dawes and Patrick Vaughan, with Alan Telford and Reece Alderson also touching down. Craig Foster wrapped up the scoring with seven goals.
In the E Lamb & Son Amateur Cup opening round, only one match went ahead after Flimby could not raise a side to go to Cockermouth and Ellenborough could not put a team together to play Salterbeck.
The game that did go ahead saw Hensingham just edge past Lowca 25-20 to move into the next round.
The two sides traded tries throughout, with Hensingham leading at the break but then having to come back in the latter stages to seal the win.
Gavin Maudling bagged a brace for Hensingham with Kurt Maudling, Alan Sim and Alex Crosby also crossing the whitewash. Sim converted two and added a drop-goal.
Lowca saw tries for Keith Campbell, Carl Ennis, Andrew Harper and Billy Dalton with Campbell on target with two goals.
In division one, Glasson beat Distington 29-12 with tries from Lee Taylor, Brad Nixon, Jonathan Bethwaite, Danny Barker and Paul Upex. Barker also added four goals and a drop-goal.
Distington’s points came from a Ryan Hodgson try and a try and two goals from Gavin Martin.
In division two, Hensingham A took the points over Egremont 24-14. Josh Rogerson was the hat-trick hero for Hensingham with Stephen Holgate and Martyn Wilson also bagging tries. Jamie Sharpe tagged on two goals.
Egremont’s points came through tries for Stephen Hartley, Tom Robson and Craig McCullough. Stephen Harrison added one goal.
Two tries from Bleu Robinson helped Frizington to a 26-14 win at Maryport A. There were further tries courtesy of Mark Hall, Craig Tyson and Peter Fowler, with Dean Armstrong kicking three goals.
Maryport’s tries came from Grant Bethwaite, John Morgan and James Jackson with a lone Andrew Cartwright goal.
Kells A and Seaton A had a tough arm tussle with the Whitehaven side emerging victorious 36-28.
Sean High led the way to the try line for Kells with a hat-trick and one goal. Michael Ramsden, Liam Broach and Lee Rutherford also touched down with Lewis Smith adding a try, two conversions and a penalty.
Seaton A saw Dan Wilson bag a brace of tries, with Pe-ter Watson, Luke Wilkinson and Keith Hunter also crossing the line. Alex McDonald kicked three goals with Craig Dowling adding one.
