Westgate Kyza in winning form as she bids for treble

WESTGATE Kyza, bidding for a third successive senior tile, was back to winning form at Cold Fell Gate last Wednesday.

Jim Glaister’s kennel tar finished very well, coming from third place to get to the front and he went on to beat Molly Malone by 10 lengths.

The runners had made a bit of a mistake going out, and they were hunting about for a while, before correcting themselves but appear to have got sorted out well enough.

Denis Peare’s Valhalla had won a week earlier at Cold Fell Gate and was back to double his tally in impressive fashion. He had 20 lengths to spare over Alyssa at the line with Sundown in third place.

The open maidens trail went to Amy Jo who found a nice turn of foot to beat Fell Dancer by 10 lengths while the open restricted went to Sensation, who beat Linsdale by four lengths.

On Thursday at Ambleside Sports Huntsman’s Charm came down in front of the other senior runners, but was overtaken close to the line by Alec and Jackie Steele’s Seven Up from Skelsmergh near Kendal.

These two were well clear of the rest who were headed in by three more of the Bland family’s runners – Jenny’s Pride, Huntsman’s Dazzler and Huntsman’s Chance.

In the senior maidens four were in with a chance, but it was Trebor who came out of the bunch to win comfortably in the end for John and Brian Graham of Bassenthwaite.

In the pups the Bland family did provide the winner as Huntsman’s Echo won very easily indeed from kennel-mate Jenny’s Dream, with table leader Desire in third place.

Denise and her family were interviewed by Rory McGrath and Paddy McGuinness, so we hope to see them on one of the television programmes featuring unusual sports.

The puppy maidens trail got off to a bad start when five came back straight away, three going up the trail the wrong way round.

However, they were all identified, and officials decided that the trail need not be made void. It was a very long trail of over 25 minutes, and the Steeles went close to getting a double when Shahdi came in front, but she was overtaken by John, Val and Tom Loan’s Quicksilver.

In the open graded trail the camera could not separate two course specialists, the Batty, Slee and Fallows’ Ivy Crag and Steven Riley’s Lady of War.

Also on Thursday there were trails at Dean where Some Girl maintained a two length advantage on the finish to beat Alfresco in the senior trail.

Quiet Swallow dominated the puppy trail leading virtually all the way except where it mattered. Slowing about 10 yards from the line she as passed by Infinity and eventually went down by a length.

There was a lot of late money for Elessar in the open restricted and it proved a shrewd investment; getting up in the 20 yards to beat My Girl by a couple of lengths.

Jim, Norman and Larry did themselves proud on Saturday with their successful introduction of the new venue at Haverigg.

Victor Brownlee took the spoils in the first two trails with Mayfair beating Silver Stream by a length after a closely fought finish.

The double was completed when Mayfly took the win from Rose and Dizzee Rascal in the pups. Again it was a closely fought contest to the line. Alison Langhorn’s Honesty narrowly took the win from Matlock in the open maidens with Davina in third.

In the open restricted Lynn Pawley and Martin Burrows’ Della took first place by half a length from Claymore with Langdale Trooper in third.

Jim, Norman and Larry would like to say thank you to the people who supported the trails.

They were also at St Helena on Saturday where the two Mollys had another very close battle in the senior trail – as they have done all season.

Unfortunately Molly Malone was adjudged to have interfered with Miss Molly on the run to the finish where she was beaten by half a length. It resulted in a disqualification and Amy Jo was promoted to second.

There was a one-two for Jeff Higgins in the pups as kennelmates Chardonnay and Shiraz picked their way through the recently ploughed final field to go clear of the rest. It was tight on the line.

It was even tighter in the open restricted but Sensation just had enough in the tank to beat Miterdale Gem by half a length.

The third Saturday meeting was at Bridekirk where there were five trails, climaxed by a seven-runner veterans trail which saw Calzaghe beat Sophisticated Lady in a good finish.

Tarantino had opened proceedings by beating Alfresco in the senior trail while Splendid Star took the maidens who supplied the biggest field of the meeting with 20 runners.

Only six pups lined-up and just four of them finished, led in by Dairy Diamond who could still have a hand to play in the puppy title race.

The Temple kennel missed-out on a double because Dairy Pearl was beaten by Quiet Swift in the puppy maidens.

On Sunday at Calebreak there was a double for Reg Smith of Kendal. Alliance was the narrow winner of the senior trail, her 12th success of the season, when she beat Show Girl and Westgate Kyza.

The second kennel success was provided by Alyssa who was just ahead of Escala and Huntsman’s Echo for her 6th puppy win.

Debbie O’Brien and partners took the Open Maidens with Not Now Jack by two lengths from Sweet Pea, and a good finish to the Open Restricted brought a win for the Dawson family of Kendal with Beyonce, finishing ahead of Linsdale.

At Lamplugh on Monday Bluebird kept her interest in the senior championship when she won comfortably from Hot Fuss, some ten lengths clear of her rival with Gendarme a similar distance away in third.

Quiet Swallow has been running well in the pups and she was always to the fore, holding a six length advantage over Alyssa at the tape.

Black Poppy has been running consistently all season but has a string of second places to her name. She showed in second place in the open maidens but came on the finish very well to get to the front and beat Maddison by two lengths.

The Barrow/Bland kennel had to settle for two runners-up spots at Kentmere Hall on Monday as Huntsman’s Chance was beaten by Crystal in the seniors and Jenny’s Dream went down to the in-form Valhalla in the pups.

Shifter took the final open restricted trail from Superseven and Toytown.

On Tuesday the Aspatria and Wigton Area held the only trail at Parsonby and although the rain threatened early on it held off but prov-ed a cold night for August.

Darling won the senior trail by to two lengths from Alfresco with Tarantino not far behind after all three had shown with a chance. The favourite Mayfair was well behind.

In the pups Brittle won for the first time, but did it impressively finishing a good 20 lengths clear of Hunter’s Lane.

Blueprint and Rough Diamond had 50 yards on the rest in the open maidens but faded badly as Splendid Star came past and should have won, But a faltering finish allowed Bushie to get through, virtually jumping the other hound to win by a length.
