Setting sail: happy memories and hopes for future

SETTING off their memories and hopes for the future in origami boats was the result of art work carried out by final year pupils at St Gregory’s and St Patrick’s Catholic Community School.

The youngsters gathered at Whitehaven’s harbourside to release their boats on to the water to mark their move into a new school next September.

Environment artist Julian Longcake, of Green Artworks, worked alongside the pupils to help them craft and decorate their wax paper boats and to fill them with poems and letters describing their feelings at leaving the infants school.

Folk singer Glynis Manning also attended the harbourside ceremony, singing traditional sea shanties with a new verse relevant to the youngsters’ experiences.
