Gladys
MUCH MISSED: Gladys Mossop, as many will remember her, at a Macmillan Nurses biggest coffee morning event in 2005

She died in The West Cumberland Hospital, on Tuesday, July 15 and her funeral service was held last Friday, July 18, at Egremont Parish Church, followed by cremation at Distington Hall.

Gladys was born in London and won a scholarship to attend The Westminster High School for Girls.

During her time there she was a very talented gymnast and part of a team who performed for several well-known celebrities of that era, and on one occasion for royalty.

After leaving school she worked for the Gas Board as an administrator until she felt she would like to do a job to help disadvantaged people.

She then moved to Cumbria to take up her post as a social worker and handicraft teacher for the blind, in Whitehaven.

Along with her late mother Mrs Mitchell, she took her blind group on many holidays -to such places as Llandudno and Ilfracombe.

She was a woman of principle and was always ready with help and kindness towards anyone who required some and will be remembered also for her many years service taking the libary trolley around in Whitehaven Hospital which she did until she was 83 years old.

She was always a devout Christian as well an enthusiastic member of the church choir and the Mothers’ Union and was for many years a member of Woodend Womens’ Institute

She will be much missed by her wide circle of friends.
