Pupils have designs on winning

WEST Cumbrian Rotary Clubs teamed up with local schools for a technology tournament at the Lakes College.
Twenty one teams from seven schools took part in the event staged by the Rotary Clubs.
They were set a technological task, which involved planning, building and producing a model.
Pupils from St Benedict’s School, Whitehaven, were the winners of the advanced section.
The school also came runners-up in the intermediate section to the West Lakes Academy side that won this class.
Also taking part were Cockermouth School, Keswick School and Workington’s Southfield and Stainburn schools.
Sponsoring the event were Sellafield Ltd, Alcan Packaging, Iggesund Paperboard, Eastman and Sainsburys.
Guests included the Vice Lord Lieutenant of the county, John Fryer-Spedding, who presented prizes, the leader of Cumbria County Council, Alan Toole, the mayor of Copeland, Anne Faichney, the Mayor of Allerdale, Ron Munby, and his wife Helen, and the Area Commander for Cumbria Constabulary, Chief Supt Kevin McGilloway.
Peter Sacre, of Workington Rotary Club, said: “This is the fourth year that the technology tournament has been held and it has proved to be a great success with the schools which have taken part.
“There are prizes of books for the winners in each group and all the students are presented with a certificate acknowledging their participation in the event.”
