Wyndham’s final send-off

THERE was a balloon representing every one of the 1,000 students at Wyndham School on Friday as a poignant ceremony saw the old school close.

The flag was lowered for the last time and, as the children looked forward to the holidays and a new academy, the balloons were sent skywards. The day also saw a time capsule about the school buried in the grounds for a future generation to pore over.

In 1964 Wyndham became the country’s first purpose-built comprehensive. West Lakes Academy, a £30 million investment backed by nuclear sponsors, begins its first day on September 1, drawing in a total of 1,150 pupils who will be taught in the existing Wyndham buildings while the Academy is built on the surrounding area, ready for opening in 2011.
