School given a good report

ARLECDON Primary School has received a good overall Ofsted report.

An inspector visited the school in February and was impressed by the social provisions for the children, such as camping and fell walking groups, which led to good personal development.

Science was a particular strength at the school with standards rising for the third successive year.

In English, standards were above average overall but reading was markedly better than in writing. Mathematics was felt to be securely above the national average.

Ofsted grades schools on various aspects of teaching and learning in a 1-4 scale with 1 being excellent.

Arlecdon received 2 for most of those categories with some 1s in the personal development and well-being section and some 3s in the leadership and management section.

The inspector advised the school that in order to improve further they should: raise the standards in writing, stren-gthen leadership and management, investigate the way information from regular assessments is used in future planning, look at the sharpness of the focus of planning for improvement and also the role of teachers as subject leaders.

Arlecdon is a much smaller than average primary school.

It is under the leadership of acting headteacher Philip Harrison, who said: “This is a fantastic result, everybody has worked really hard to ensure that Arlecdon remains a good school.

“I would like to thank staff, pupils and parents for their continued support.”
