A 40-year-old rail worker was left shaken after being attacked at a level crossing in St Bees.
Police said the victim was carrying out maintenance in St Bees when a man ran at him and knocked him to the ground - causing bruising to his body.
The offender, who had been part of a group of three or four men, ran off towards the village.
He is described as white, in his 30s, about 6ft tall and was wearing a white England rugby shirt.
Officers believe the group of men had been talking to a taxi driver parked next to the level crossing before the assault in the early hours of Sunday.
Pc Darren Rogers, of British Transport Police, said: "This appears to be a completely unprovoked attack on a member of staff who was simply going about his job."
