Salvaltion Army Gala Day at Whitehaven during June 1969

50010247W004.jpg It was roses all the way for 18 year old Judith Robertson of Egremont when she was crowned Whitehaven Salvation Army's first Gala Queen during June 1969. The roses were strewn in Castle Park by members of the Cowper School of Dancing who later entertained the large number of visitors who also enjoyed the sideshows and stalls. The proceeds from the gala went towards the proposed new Salvation Army Centre to replace the building in Catherine Street.
