Whitehaven News editorial comment
Sick and stupid
Published 7 May 2008
IT’S difficult to determine which is the most disappointing aspect of the racist abuse case heard in court this week. There’s the racial abuse itself, of course – a damning indictment of man in the 21st century.
Long wait is over for Woodhouse
Published 7 May 2008
IT has been over three years since the regeneration body West Lakes Renaissance first promoted the idea of making improvements to the Woodhouse estate. This week residents of the estate have seen the long-awaited masterplan for their estate – Woodhouse Evolution – unveiled.

WHILE the lid may have been put on our waste bin saga (though don’t count on it), there’s another kind of dust that definitely needs to settle.
Rebuilding confidence in Copeland’s services
Published 30 April 2008
IT’S reassuring to see Copeland Council bouncing back after wheelie-bin-gate. Whitehaven was receiving national and international publicity last week for all the wrong reasons.
Copeland hit hard by audit commission’s killer punch
Published 24 April 2008
THE Audit Commission rarely pulls any punches. And this time they’ve given Copeland Council a left hook worthy of Joe Calzaghe.
Signs’ galore
Published 23 April 2008
AS we report the police concerns over the theft of a speed indicator sign (SID) from a Cleator Moor roadside, it prompts us to speculate on a wheelie bin full-ness device.
Time for a wholesale review of our roads

THE appalling tragedy that happened last Saturday night on the A595 near Moota has left the whole community in a state of shock.
Litter problem is solvable
Published 16 April 2008
OVER £200 for having a wheelie bin without its lid closed has certainly given a Whitehaven council tax payer a short sharp shock this week. We assume the regulations on not overfilling the wheelie bin are designed to prevent the risk of vermin and scavengers browsing over domestic refuse.

Is this really the end of that sinking feeling..?

NO-ONE likes to think they could be sitting on top of a mineshaft. In Egremont it is happening with a frightening regularity.
Sour milk
Published 9 April 2008
ONE would (we are told) have to drink 75,000 litres of (local) milk before there is any risk to human health from its radioactive content.
Polls apart
Published 2 April 2008
STRONG rumours reached our newsdesk this week that the government might be gearing up for a General Election next spring. Gordon Brown must certainly be watching closely to see if the economic feel good factor continues to decline as we head into 2009.
A hefty pay day – but the borough deserves nothing less

THEY always say that “where there’s muck there’s money”. You could also say from events this week that nuclear waste also generates a lot of brass, and if a fair wedge of it goes the way of the community then all the better.
Never forget the nuclear pioneers
Published 26 March 2008
IF we accept the gloomy predictions that Sellafield’s clean-up could lead to the loss of around 10,000 local nuclear jobs in the next 15 years or so – with all the dark implications that carries for employment off-site and among business suppliers – then a startling forecast by government minister John Hutton could strike a hollow tone in these parts.
Public voice
Published 19 March 2008
OUR MP Jamie Reed is quoted as urging the government to earmark £1 billion as a payback to the area that ‘volunteers’ to take the UK’s nuclear waste in a deep repository.

THE familiar red Post Office van and handy post offices have been a welcome part of our daily lives for generations. How long will it continue?
Lifeline for Haven RL is lifeline for a community
Published 12 March 2008
OUR local authority and the movers and shakers of regeneration have taken a few well-aimed brickbats of late. But this week plaudits are in order because Copeland Borough Council and its various partners have put together a timely deal which effectively saves the life of Whitehaven’s semi-professional rugby league club.
Hair apparent
Published 12 March 2008
WE report this week how a Mirehouse student was briefly expelled for dyeing his hair in dramatic style. We might be running the risk of being labelled old fashioned, but our sympathy lies with the school and its headmaster.
Tackling a crisis
Published 5 March 2008
OVER the years Sellafield has supported – and even founded a lifeline for – many local organisations, including our professional rugby club. It is sad to learn of Whitehaven RLFC’s present financial plight and clearly the club is in urgent need of more help not only to get them over current difficulties to plan for the future.
Sellafield’s heart misses a beat over latest claims
Published 5 March 2008
THE link between heart diseases among nuclear workers and their exposure to higher levels of radiation at Sellafield and the other BNFL plants is disturbing, if not shocking.
