Flying winger Craig Calvert scored his 100th try for Whitehaven before the Sky TV cameras on Thursday night - but it wasn't enough to prevent his side being eclipsed by Salford, the National League One title favourites.

Haven - including new signing from Halifax Andy Gorski, who came on as a first-half substitute -  gave a good account of themselves before going down 36-10.

The Reds were faster and slicker. "Salford taught us a lesson. They played the game we wanted to play," said Whitehaven coach Ged Stokes.

Whitehaven hope their capture of Gorski will soften the blow of losing star player Richard Fletcher earlier in the week.
Gorski plays in the same position and club director Barry Richardson enthused: "We have rated Andy highly ever since his days at Rochdalle where he was captain for three years. He runs as well as he tackles and we are sure he's going to be an asset. Our coach Ged Stokes was very keen to bring him to the Recreation Ground."

Star of Thursday night's game was Salford's teenage scrum-half Richard Myler with a brilliant hat-trick of tries. Calvert and Ade Adebisi on the the other wing came within an ace of scoroing early tries before The Reds got on top. Outstanding for Haven were Tongan centre Saia Makise and fullback Gary Broadbent.
